Poitiers, Oradour-sur-Glane, Limoges

We just tonite got back from a two-day trip to Poitiers, Oradour-sur-Glane, and Limoges, where they make Limoges porcelain. Dan will be posting photos, I'm sure, but we saw some amazing things, including fields and fields of sunflowers, which made us think each time of our sweet Lena.

Oradour was dramatic and amazing. If you don't have time to read about it on the website, here's the gist: On June 10, 1944, 200 SS soldiers surrounded the village, corralled the 642 inhabitants of the village, and killed them all except for six who escaped. They shot the men and, having gathered the women and children into the church, shot and burned them. They set all of the buildings on fire, burning most of the bodies beyond recognition. The German soldiers then buried the corpses in a mass grave.

Who can do a thing like that? And what kinds of things like that are happening now, in our global village?
